Back East (March 9, 2001)

[Ten years ago, I moved from Washington, DC to San Diego, CA. I am re-publishing the things I wrote during that move exactly ten years after they happened. Read the intro here.]

Yesterday I flew from LAX to Providence, RI to meet up with Jenn, who was sick of hearing about how much fun I was having while she was finishing up Naval Justice School. Jenn graduated this morning (the picture above is her with classmate Lt. Michael Kennett) and then we packed up her belongings.

I have only been a California resident for 36 hours, but I am already unable to handle cold weather. After a week in Vegas & SoCal, Rhode Island is the frickin’ North Pole. This is compounded by the fact that my winter coat is packed away somewhere (I’m sure I’ll find it when we unpack so I can never use it again) and my light jacket didn’t help much. Jenn’s building is right by the water here in Newport, and when you walk in between the buildings (that’s where the car is), you are hit with a whipping, wet wind off the icy water. Maybe it’s the psychological factor of knowing we’re moving to warm weather, but packing that car was the coldest I can ever remember being.

We have two stops here on the East coast before we set out again. There is a bridal shower for my future sister-in-law in Wilkes-Barre, PA tomorrow afternoon (my brother and I will retire to the nearest bar during the festivities), and then we’ll have one last night in DC. I’m now an expert in driving from Washington to San Diego, so I’m sure it will be a breeze.
