Kansas! March 14, 2001
[Ten years ago, I moved from Washington, DC to San Diego, CA. I am re-publishing the things I wrote during that move exactly ten years after they happened. Read the intro here.]
Instead of taking the most direct route from Omaha to California, we decided to see the magic that Kansas had to offer. This is primarily because Jenn is a big fan of Bob Dole. I guess that betrays the DC part of us that someone can be a “fan” of a politician. Nonetheless, Russell, Bob Dole’s home town, is conveniently located near the interstate, so we made sure to stop. Surprisingly, Russell is also the home town of Arlen Specter - I bet he will stay a Republican forever.*
*Ok, I just added that part in.
So, we tooled around for an hour, taking pictures of each other in front of things that said Bob Dole on them, and soaked in the small town Kansas atmosphere. It’s not exactly The World’s Largest Ball of Twine, but it was our folksy detour on this trip.
After our grand tour of Russell, we looked for a place to spend the night. We ended up in Colby, KS, which is hundreds of miles from any large metropolis. However, this small town had the only hotel we’ve found along the route with high-speed Internet access* and a 24-hour pool.
*It’s hard to realize now how odd it was to find high-speed Internet access back then. Most hotels, even fancy business ones, only had the extra phone jack that would allow you to access dial-up. Just days before we had just gotten into a fight with the place Jenn stayed at in Newport because she was using a dial-up number that was a local toll call for nine weeks. They wanted to charge hundreds of dollars in fees, and I said their information was misleading. And now, my phone has better internet access than our computers did back then. Yay, progress!
